Has your normal daily and weekly routine been changed over the past few weeks? I know mine has. Daily routines and rituals are important to being productive. On normal Tuesday and Thursday mornings I rise at 5:00 AM for hot coffee and then get on my bike at 5:45 AM to ride for 23 miles with some cycling friends. On these mornings I rarely need the alarm clock. My body knows the routine and I just wake up. This is a great start to my day and I find these days to be very productive.
For the first 4 weeks of the shutdown I did not ride in the early mornings or with anyone else. My main concern was that I might crash and have to go to the hospital (something I have done several times over the past 30 years}. Certainly the hospital is the last place someone wants to be in right now. Fortunately over the past 2 weeks I have been able to get back into most of my normal routines and I find myself being more productive.
Finding new routines over the past couple of months has taken an adjustment for me. I have been coming to this same office for the past 33 years and not showing up here every day, and working from home, has been very different. Zoom has certainly helped to stay in touch with people but I miss roaming the halls seeing everyone.
Life is full of changes and certainly our world will change due to this pandemic. New routines and rituals will become a part of your day. The trick is keep some of your important routines while embracing new ones. A new normal will emerge and make us all stronger.
