Happy New Year to All!

Each year, at the beginning of the year, I sit in a quiet spot at my home and write down some goals for the year. I have been doing this for some time and I have found that it allows me to focus on things that I want to get accomplished. I can certainly say that I have not always accomplished all of my goals each year, but, I find that the simple act of writing them down, and then reviewing them several times a month helps me to stay of task.

I arrange my goals in the following groups:
  • Family
  • Health/Fitness
  • Finances
  • Work
  • Travel
  • House
  • Books

Over the years I have had things like "Ride a Century" which is a 100-mile cycle ride in one day, travel to Yellowstone National Park, plant a garden, have my daughters graduate from college (almost there!), eat 5 fruits and vegatables a day, save a certain amount of money each week, and read as many books as possible. In the early years, many of my goals revolved around my daughters, and now many of them revolve around my wife Chris and travel.

This year's list includes "learn to weld", go to the "Gators/Aggies football game in Texas", and "cycle 5000 miles" this year.

I would encourage all of you to write some goals down and get cracking! It has been fun over the years to look back and see what I have accomplished. Many times I aimed too low and I raised the bar once I saw that I could accomplish a goal that I thought was out of reach. Having the discipline to write your goals down, and then hold yourself accountable, is not easy, but, it can be extremely rewarding when you set your mind to it. You can do it!
